"The True Cost" For What Extent
The other day I saw a very inspiring film that talked about how fast fashion in the fashion industry has ruined our economy and has created more injustices to the people of our planet. From that particular film it stated some things that we the people can do to help change tis problem and make a difference.
Some things we as a society can do in order to make a change and stop the negative effects of “Fast Fashion” are to. Stop and recognize/ research the main contributors to fast fashion and allow yourself to limit the amount you spend at those stores, if it is a place you shop at. This will then shorten the demand of fast fashion for the main contributors and will eventually help our economy. Now one might think how can myself, one individual make a difference. Well your effort in shortening the demand will also inspire others to do the same and from there it will cause a chain reaction. That's if you inform your friends of this horrible outbreak. Another way is by thrifting for clothes you like will inhibit in yourself recycling clothes that would otherwise end up in a dump. Every year and average individual will dump 82 pounds of clothes per year wich in the united states adds up to millions of pound of clothes a year. Only ten percent of those clothes make it into america's’ GoodWill and thrift stores. The other 90% goes to other third world countries including Haiti. Fun fact, isn't it a bit ironic that third world countries produces great sums of clothes for the americas and uk, etc. Just to find that those clothes that the shed blood and tears on are going to end up right on their own backs in a couple of years. It is important to thrift because one garment will spend 200 to 300 years just to break down and with the help or your recycling this problem can be reduced. Anything will help. Nevertheless it is very important to learn what ‘Fast Fashion” does to our economy, the workers/people and its true cost. The true cost of “Fast Fashion is that there are people who die, who don't see their children but twice a year, who starve, who get beaten , who fall sick of pollution, who only make 10$ a month, who farm at the risc of their own lives. At the brink of it all The true cost is death, illness, poverty, pollution, social inequalities, corruption, and children left without their parents. All for what exactly, to make 52 Different trends a year which result in new trends every week. That will unfortunately end up with consumers throwing out more clothes because it has gone out of style. There is a huge chain reaction from then on that only causes more and more problems to our economy and society. Do Not support “Fast Fashion’’ as the only thing you will be gaining from it is subconscious guilt.
Not only that but marketing campaigns advertise fashion that is disposable much like rolls of paper towels. I personally do not agree with this because i do not believe that fashion should ever be thought about as disposable. Nor do i believe that clothes should ever be thought of as just things. For i know that there are people in this world who do not have either clothes and or money to even buy them. This then makes me grateful to have clothes on my back weather they are hand me downs, designer or from the thrift store. Marketing Campaigns we can all agree, only show and tell you what the people / consumers want to here. Advertisement compares fashion to things we use instead of things we need. This then makes people think that fashion is like face wash, cotton swabs etc. Fashion should not be made to look like this because it results in overspending which leads to more cloths being thrown away, the more clothes thrown away the more social injustice and economic problems. We are consumers but one shouldn't think of us as a money machine but people. As we all look to gain more money we also subconsciously are make ourselves poorer. This is because we give away our money like we throw away our clothes and from then on the cycle continues.
After watching this film i definitely will be putting in more effort into helping my planet and the people who live on it. To achieve this i will shop less at the contributing stores, will thrift shop more, will recycle used clothes to make better ones, will limit the amount of clothes i throw away, and will try to buy sustainable fashion. In my life i have learned to give back to others as it not only give me satisfactory but gives me a purposeful feeling knowing that i have done my part in changing the world. Weather it is small or not. So as i watched this movie i noted all the things i can do to change the economy and social injustice as i already have paid my dues to discriminations of mankind. My purpose in life is to be the best individual i can be and in order to due so i follow my heart. My heart today says that doing this will be one of the things i will never forget and will always cherish. For the sanctity of the people is my personal goal. One individual can make a difference and one individual can change history. I might not do either of theses but at the end of the day i know i have done my part.
